ART AGAINST TERRORISM
Terrorism cannot be equated with rebellion, revolution and war, even though like rebels, revolutionaries and combatants the terrorists use violence.
The rebels, revolutionaries and combatants in war target the power bases and power points of the powerful adversaries, at appointed time and place. The terrorists direct their wanton violence at soft targets lives in peaceful pursuits and properly built up with labour and love. The targets, the terrorists strike at, can hardly ever be conceived has antithetical to their so-called ‘cause’. By their wanton violence against soft targets the terrorists hardly ever make a dent in the power-nexus of the adversaries.
Terrorism makes a mockery of the ‘lofty aims’ for which they supposedly indulge in misdirected violence. The terrorists by their acts of their wanton violence against defenceless endanger the lives, the labour and dignity of the very people for the supposed wrong done to whom, they pawn their lives.
Terrorism, therefore, is cowardice. Terrorists by their choice of time of use of surrepticious violence against unsuspecting and defenceless non-adversaries are a scourge to normal pursuit of life and labour, by all, including those for whom the terrorists supposedly speak. Terrorism not only threatens to wreck and wrecks normal life activity without a promise of any constructive programme (unlike that in rebellion, revolution and war), it stifles normal life activities of all (including those in whose name the terrorists supposedly indulge in acts of terror) in the in the targeted areas of their vengeful operation.
Even the most rebellious and revolutionary art activists like to carry out their vocation peacefully in a situation free from uncertainties and sudden disruption. The art activists hate to witness destruction of fruits of their toil and love, as well as those of their predecessors in wanton acts of violence. Art activists, therefore, have to stand up and be counted among those who resolve to fight for normalcy of life against uncertainties. Security of life and solidarity of all forces against insecurity are the need of the hour.
We the art activists of Kolkata and Bengal as a whole have decided to demonstrate our resolve to express our solidarity with all forces of the civil society and the state fighting the scourge of terrorism, through a series of art exhibitions, held concurrently in several Kolkata galleries, for two weeks, beginning from the last week of March 2009.
We are requesting every Kolkata art gallery to have its own exhibition of art, on the common theme of ART AGAINST TERRORISM, in the suggested period. It is entirely up to the individual galleries to choose their artists and exhibits.
We are requesting all important individual artists to participate in this demonstration of solidarity at the gallery of their choice. Our other request is that no artist should participate in more than one gallery show.
There will be one integrated catalogue for the whole show. Please Respond Positively Without Delay.
